Claude

Vetted · No vendor relationship
Reviewed Sep 2026 · Every claim sourced · Category: everyday writing & drafting
Straight verdict: use it for writing and analysis where being wrong is expensive — it admits ignorance more readily than most rivals, and the 2026 product is much bigger than chat: Artifacts, 950+ MCP connectors, Claude Code, enterprise-managed auth, and a Security product for codebase auditing. Skip it if you need unlimited free volume; the free tier runs dry fast, and that's the trade for what you get.
Data

Where does your data go?

Your conversations go to Anthropic's cloud (US-based). The key difference from ChatGPT: consumer plans (Free, Pro, Max) are opt-in for model training — they don't train on your chats unless you say yes. ChatGPT's consumer plans train by default until you opt out. Two catches:

  • Opt in, and chats are retained 5 years (de-identified) in training pipelines. Stay opted out and you're on a 30-day cycle.
  • Flagged conversations can be used for safety training regardless of settings, and thumbs up/down feedback is kept 5 years.
  • Team/Enterprise/API plans: never trained on, period. And per Anthropic's written commitment, Claude stays ad-free — a direct contrast with ChatGPT's new free-tier ads.
Translate it: the default privacy posture is the best among the big chat tools — but only if you leave the training switch off. Turning it on hands them five years of your data.
Reliability

What happens when it's wrong?

The published pattern inverts ChatGPT's: Claude says "I don't know" more often.

  • Hard factual recall — best in field. Claude 4.1 Opus posted the top AA-Omniscience score of any model (one of only three above zero) largely by declining to guess. Claude 4.5 Haiku holds the lowest measured hallucination rate on that benchmark: 26%, against GPT-5's 81% guessing rate.
  • The 2026 regression nobody advertised. Anthropic's own system card admits Opus 5 "hallucinates factual claims slightly more than Opus 4.8, despite being more accurate overall." The measured rate rose about 14 points to roughly 50%. Newer is not automatically safer.
  • Summarizing a document it's handed — a surprising soft spot. Claude Sonnet 4.5 scored above 10% on Vectara's grounded-summarization leaderboard, worse than older GPT-4o (1.5%) on the same test.
Practical rule: it's the model most likely to tell you it isn't sure — worth more than a confident guess. But "fewer wrong answers" partly means "fewer answers." See the glossary for every term these reviews use.
Limits

What's it actually bad at?

  • Volume on a budget. The free tier caps around 30–100 messages per day (ChatGPT's free tier went unlimited on text in Aug 2026). Heavy users hit walls daily.
  • The abstention trade. When you need an answer and Claude won't give one, that's friction. The reliability comes from answering less, not from being right more often.
  • Grounded summarization — its weakest measured task relative to rivals.
  • A thinner integration surface on cheaper tiers. Google Workspace and Slack to start; Microsoft 365 and Outlook require Pro or above.
Cost

What does it cost really?

Free
$0

Roughly 30–100 messages a day. No ads — and Anthropic has committed to keeping it that way.

Pro / Max
$20 / $100+

Pro $20/mo, or $17 with annual ($200 up front). Max 5x $100, Max 20x $200 — monthly billing only, no annual option.

Team
$25/seat

$20/seat annual, 2-seat minimum. No training on your data, by contract. Premium seats ($125/$100) add Claude Code and 5x usage.

The traps: Pro annual is $200 up front, not installments. A subscription includes zero API credits — the API bills separately. And the Enterprise seat fee is just the door: usage bills at API rates, so budget by tokens, not seats.

Impact

What does it replace — and what do you still do?

Same drafting coverage as ChatGPT — emails, posts, outlines, summaries, document analysis — with an edge on nuance and long documents (200K context; 500K on Enterprise). You still own: factual verification (especially citations), final judgment, and anything numeric. Expect slightly more "I'm not certain — here's what I'd need to verify," which slows the workflow a little and raises the floor on accuracy.

Platform

What the ecosystem offers

  • Projects — folders that keep their memory, same idea as ChatGPT's. Group one client's work and stop re-explaining.
  • Artifacts — when Claude builds something for you (a document, a mini-app, a chart), it lives in its own panel you can edit, share, and update live — with live data from your connected tools instead of going stale.
  • Connectors — Claude's real edge. Nearly a thousand plug-ins connect it to the tools you already use, and Claude's company helped create the standard they all follow. New in 2026: set up your company's connectors once through your sign-in provider, and everyone inherits access automatically — removing someone's account removes their access too.
  • Claude Code — the developer tool, included on paid plans. Anthropic also sells a separate Security product that scans code for vulnerabilities and drafts fixes.
  • The newest model (Sep 2026) — same sticker price, but caching costs dropped 75%, making typical workloads roughly 25% cheaper. One compliance note: Claude's text now carries invisible AI Act watermarks with a public detection tool — worth knowing if you publish AI-written text in the EU.
  • Enterprise option: a setup that keeps agent-monitoring data on your own servers instead of Anthropic's.
Exit

If I stop paying, what do I lose?

  • Export: yes, self-serve — Settings → Privacy → Export data (web or desktop only). Link emailed, expires in 24 hours.
  • Gotchas: no export from the mobile apps. Exported data can't be imported into another Claude account — it's for your records, not for migrating. On Team/Enterprise, only the Primary Owner can run exports.
  • Deletion is a two-step with a wait: Pro/Max users cancel the subscription, then wait until the billing period ends before the account can be deleted. Self-serve, but slower than it needs to be.
  • Account deletion: yes, permanent — chats leave history immediately, back-end storage within 30 days.
  • One exit upside: a personal account migrates directly into a Team/Enterprise workspace — no export needed to take your work to a company plan.
Fit

Who is this NOT for?

High-volume users on a zero budget — the free tier's daily caps make it a non-starter next to ChatGPT's unlimited free text. Also not for anyone who needs every question answered now: if your workflow can't tolerate "I'm not sure, let's verify," the abstention habit will frustrate you. And for mobile-only users — no exports from the phone apps.

David's take — Claude is the tool for the owner whose worst outcome is a confident wrong answer: legal-adjacent work, careful client communication, anything where precision beats volume. The opt-in training default is the most owner-respecting data posture among the major chatbots, and the ad-free commitment reads like a company that decided trust is the product. The costs are real: the free tier's cap is a hard wall, and the deletion flow's "wait until your subscription ends" step is friction with no technical justification. If you use AI a few times a day for real work and care where your words end up, this is the pick.
